WAP/GPRS Info

What is WAP?

WAP is short for Wireless Application Protocol and allows you to browse the web with your mobile. You cannot necessarily view all sites on your mobile using WAP though - only pages designed for WAP viewing (pages written in wireless mark-up language).
If you have ever downloaded a polyphonic tone, mobile game or wallpaper to your phone you have used WAP.

What is GPRS?

GPRS stands for Global Packet RadiSystem. GPRS is basically like broadband for your mobile phone. It allows you a high speed, high capacity data connection that is always on for browsing WAP sites. Customers with GPRS are charged by the amount of data they download.
GPRS connectivity allows customers to browse colour sites and engage in multi-media messaging.
Most phone models released since 2003 allow for GPRS connectivity, simply inquire with your mobile network operator if you are interested in activating GPRS for your phone.

How do I know if I have WAP?

If you are unsure if you have WAP activated on your phone, here is a way of checking:

1. To find where to access WAP or GPRS on your phone, first check your phone's manual. Otherwise, below are suggestions for popular models:
Nokia: Check for a folder called "services" for your settings, homepage, bookmarks etc. 3650/7650/N-gage users select WAP from your menu.
Sony Ericsson: Check your "connectivity" folder.
Samsung: Check your "funbox" and select "WAP browser".
Siemens: Check your "surf & fun" folder and select "Internet".
Motorola: Check for "web sessions" folder.
Panasonic: Check your "browser" folder.
Sharp: Check your "settings" and then "Internet".

2. Look for "Home" and click on that choice.

3. If you have WAP activated on your phone this should initiate a WAP connection and connect you to a WAP site (most likely your network's).

If this does not initiate a WAP connection then either you don't have the correct settings for your mobile, WAP or GPRS may not have been activated for your phone by your network or your phone doesn't support WAP.

Check with your Service Provider/Phone Manufacturer for further information.

What capacity is needed on my phone to use WAP?

1. You need a WAP capable mobile phone.
Most phones available in Australia have either WAP or GPRS capability. Check your phone's manual to see if your phone has WAP functionality. Contact your local mobile phone shop if you are still not sure whether your phone is WAP capable.

2. You need thave WAP activated for the SIM card in your mobile phone.
You might need to contact your network operator to enable WAP on your SIM card if it was not set-up when you purchased your phone. They will simply send you a text that will activate WAP on your SIM card.

3. You need thave WAP settings.
These settings enable your phone to engage WAP connections. Your Service Provider can send you WAP settings for your phone.
